SINGAPORE CLAY HERITAGE
ISKANDAR JALIL
The Potter's Collection
"Singapore Clay Heritage series provides insights to unfolding ceramic art history, featuring outstanding clay change-makers."

The early 1990s saw Iskandar Jalil rise as a strident voice in pottery. His dedication to a strict studio practice and the many students he mentored brought a new wave of ceramics appreciation to Singapore. Famous for throwing out unworthy pieces of work, his development of how he interpreted ‘the ethical pot’ re-drew the guidelines of ceramics appreciation for those who followed him. Where in the 1990s the pottery medium was appreciated as craft rather than art, Iskandar’s adopted values of wabi-sabi were strongly iterated in his pottery which was exhibited at his solo The Potter’s Journey, 1990 at the National Museum Art Gallery. The watershed exhibition opened many eyes to appreciate the depth of pottery-making and also brought many collectors to his studio and exhibitions.
Singapore Clay Festival is honoured to exhibit a selection of works from the celebrated potter’s own collection. Each work marks a place in Iskandar’s memory even as it holds its position in the potter’s repository of works created over fifty years.

OCBC WORKS OF KINDNESS 2025
Let’s recall the kindness we have received and pay it forward.
The Singapore Clay Festival, with support from OCBC, is organising OCBC Works of Kindness, a curated exhibition of chawan – tea bowls – open to all clay makers in Singapore.
-
All clay makers in Singapore are invited to submit one or more chawan for this curated exhibition.
-
The chawan will be exhibited in a showcase at the Singapore Clay Festival 2025 from 6 - 9 November 2025, together with chawan made by seniors served by Care Corner Singapore.
-
The best three chawan chosen by a panel of judges will receive certificates of commendation.
