KEYNOTE TALK

Unearthing a Heritage - Bricks, Dragon Kilns & Studio Potteries

Chua Soo Kim & Anoma Pieris

Make sure you get tickets to the Keynote Talk by Professor Anoma Pieris, from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, The University of Melbourne and senior potter Chua Soo Kim of Sam Mui Kuang pottery.

Our island is blessed with a range of clays suitable for pottery works. From these clays, bricks were fired for the ancient structures during pre-colonial times and colonial settlements, and dragon kilns made urns, jars and other clay wares from the early 1900s. Unearthing a Heritage – Bricks, Dragon Kilns & Studio Potteries explores all these elements as a setting for contemporary ceramic practice in Singapore today.

Masterpotter Chua Soo Kim will speak on the history of Sam Mui Kuang dragon kiln and describe the processes and products of the commercial kiln, while Professor Anoma Pieris will talk ‘About Bricks in Singapore’. Professor Pieris will trace the history of bricks in Singapore, from the early years of colonisation to its heyday in the mid-twentieth century. She will also discuss the kilns’ locations and technology, and introduce some buildings constructed from Singapore-made bricks.

A Q&A session will follow the talk.

Masterclass with Masterpotter Jessie Lim / Hand-Building

Senior ceramist Jessie Lim has run an independent studio since her return to Singapore in the 1990s. Lim is noted for her large nature-inspired sculptures, often in monochrome glaze. Teaching pottery all the while, she steadily developed her characteristic techniques and vocabulary for sizeable hand-built clay works, as well as constellations of smaller table pieces.

This will be your opportunity to not only hear the ceramics doyenne talk about her practice and demonstrate hand-building but also to ask her those sticky clay questions you have and get answers that will help you move on with your own work!

There may be opportunities for onsite hands-on practice too.

Venue: Classroom 3, Academy block, Enabling Village
